Family Finds Help From Neighbors After House Explosion

CHANTILLY, Va. (WUSA) -- A Chantilly family lost everything when their house exploded. It happened six days before Christmas, and since then, friends and family have reached out to help.

It was by chance that Thuan Nguyen, his wife Hahn Dinh, and their kids Alvin, 13, and Austin, 5, weren't home.

"We were really lucky," Alvin said.

The family was five minutes from home when it exploded. Since then, they've stayed with family. They hope to move into a house rental next week.

"We love the neighborhood, we love the school," Nguyen said.

And their neighbors love them. After the explosion, neighbors rushed inside their home to make sure they weren't there. When the smoke cleared, neighbors offered help.

Nguyen said his sons schools donated clothes and gift cards, and complete strangers have given them money.

Christmas Reunions At Dulles

CHANTILLY, Va. (WUSA) -- For folks who have been away from home for a long time, reuniting families this time of year has special meaning.

9NewsNow found some of those moments at Dulles International Airport.

For Fredericksburg Aunt Jessica Blua and her niece from Ecuador it's a reunion 12 years in the making.

Blua says, "I'm so, so happy!"

Another family welcomes their daughter flying in from texas. "You know I missed you!"

And Abby Schwarz was showered with hugs and kisses, 5 months after studying in Chile.

Reunions happen all the time at airports, but knowing their loved one is coming home in time for Christmas is that much more special for some families.

Russell Shillingburg says, "My heart's beating. The moment of waking up my heart was beating a mile a minute waiting for her to come home. It makes our Christmas."

SLIDESHOW: Festivus in Chantilly

CHANTILLY, Va. (WUSA) -- If you are an avid Seinfeld fan then you know all about the December 23rd celebration of Festivus.

The secular holiday, which became popular thanks to the Seinfeld sitcom, is a celebration whose participants describe it as an alternative to traditional holiday parties. It involves plenty of drinking, and three important stages.

The first stage is the Airing of Grievances where participants give each other an honest ribbing about their behavior or actions during the previous year. Then, there is the Feat of Strengths where Festivus faithful challenge each other to obscure physical tasks like push-ups for bragging rights.

After all the above is complete, the Festivus celebration comes to an end after the host of the party is pinned down to the ground by another participant.
