Honor Brewing Company pays tribute to military through beer

CHANTILLY, Va. (WUSA9) -- A Virginia company is brewing up a unique way to honor the men and women who have served our country.

And behind every ounce of beer and wine at Honor Brewing Company is the story of a fallen hero or wounded warrior.

"We can’t bring them back. And we can’t bring their legs back. But you can honor them and you can say thank you," David Keuhner, a partner at Honor Brewing Company said.

Staff Sgt. Wade Bennett was killed in Afghanistan in 2012. Mandi Bennett lost her husband and the father of her two young children.

She did not lose her infectiously positive personality.

"To be honest, he got to blow [explitive] up. Those were his words. And so he loved it," Mandi Bennett said.  "My husband loved his job."

Soon, there will be an Honor beer on tap, bearing Wade Bennett’s name.

"Oh, he’d love it. He would LOVE having a beer in his name. Oh my gosh, that tap!"

Mandi Bennett moved her family from Washington State to Virginia to be closer to Wade, who’s buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

"It’s where we’re supposed to be. When we have bad days, we go to Arlington. We have donuts with Dad," Mandi Bennett said.

Keuhner knows what it’s like to grow up without a father. He was just six years old when his Dad died after two tours in Vietnam. Honor is his way of giving back.

"You get one chance at life. So let’s figure out what we’re going to do with it," Keuhner said.

This is not a story of sorrow, but of hope.

"Getting opportunities to talk about my husband, I love. I love that," Mandi Bennett said. "I will talk about my husband til the day that I’m no longer here."
